Microwaves can cook food quickly than the conventional kitchen range. These Microwave ovens are easier to use than the conventional kitchen range for simple cooking tasks, such as heating leftovers, making popcorn, defrosting frozen foods and cooking pre-packaged meals. However, foods are steamed, and not crisp unless special accessories are used. Uneven heating is also common unless the food is stirred or rearranged occasionally. Microwave ovens cook food by emitting microwaves, which are high-frequency electromagnetic waves. Since microwaves are absorbed only by molecules inside the food, the cooking and baking time is greatly reduced compared to other types of ovens.
Microwaves come in a variety of sizes, from compact to large. Many brands in the market are offering microwaves, GE leads the countertop microwave-oven market with approximately 30 percent of units sold, followed by Sharp. Other brands include Emerson, Kenmore, Panasonic, Amana, Daewoo, Ewave, Goldstar, Whirlpool, Viking, Bosch, Kitchen Aid, Maytag Microwave Ovens, Thermador Microwaves, Monograms Microwaves and many others. GE also sells the most over-the-range models.
