Almost all microwaves, from the most basic to top-of-the-line models have two features in common: they cook and they defrost. These are the basic features and from there, models range in feature offerings increased performance including precise, even cooking, browning and crisping, higher speeds, and uniform defrosting. Some models offer greater convenience features such as programmable memory, or an auto defrost control. Microwave hood combinations and countertop microwaves are the two basic styles of microwave ovens and they offer many of the same features, including sensor cooking, convection, auto cook, and auto defrosts.
Even the most basic microwave models will efficiently and conveniently heat and defrost food. If you want to defrost frozen food, the microwave sensors will adjust the time and temperature as needed and will automatically shut off the oven when it determines that the food is cooked or sufficiently heated. Many higher-end models feature these sensors. The sensor is also used to automate cooking times and power levels for commonly cooked items such as frozen entrees. Many models are with inverter technology that provide gentle, even power levels for defrosting and cooking the frozen food centers.
